I have family in Davos and I am lucky enough to go there on weekends or longer trips several times a year. I got to experience Davos during winter and summer and no matter what time you decide to visit, there are always beautiful things to see and exciting things to do!
Now what to do on a lazy, sunny day in Davos?
Breakfast! The best one.
Breakfast, the essential, yet it can be a great experience in Switzerland. I absolutely adore german and swiss bakeries and cafés and Davos isn’t short of any of these.
My favorite cafe is Kaffee Klatsch. Especially during the winter season you will find it absolutely packed but if you manage to get a seat, enjoy the morning with a nice coffee and a waffle. Or any of the other delicious cakes (I recommend a traditional type of cake called “Waehe“)
If breakfast isn’t your thing, why not go there for brunch. They got traditional swiss dishes that are not very heavy, yet filling. I love going there with my mum after a walk through town.
Where? Kaffee Klatsch Cafe, Promenade 72, 7270 Davos Platz, Switzerland
Swimming, Paddle boating and a walk around Lake Davos
If the sun is shining then how about a bit of swimming and paddle boat riding? Lake Davos is a great place for exercise (if you are anything like me then you will need some after eating cheese and chocolate all day long 😉 ). Paddle boat riding is fun and a bit more budget friendly. You can hire funny taxi-shaped paddle boats next to the lake restaurant or just enjoy a swim in the clear lake.
A bit more pricey, but probably slightly more exiting; you can also surf, sail and wake board at the lake if the weather is right!
Where? Lake Davos, Bachi’s Strandbad Davos, Stillistrasse 7, 7260 Davos Dorf
How much? Paddle boat 27 Swiss Franc (23/24 pounds) per hour. All the activities can be booked here.
What next? Climb a mountain!
There are many options for hiking in Davos. My favorite? Take one of of the mountain railways up to Jakobshorn (for example). Get out on the first stop and walk along the hiking paths up there. That way you’re already quite high up and get to enjoy a great view while you hike and you’re likely to find adorable mountain animals to pet. All of the railways are really spacious so it’s easy to take a bike up there for a bike tour as well.
Also there are great restaurant/bars on top of all of the mountains and it’s the best having a meal or a drink with such an amazing view.
If you stay in a hotel in Davos you will automatically get a tourist ticket which allows you to take all public transport around Davos (this includes mountain railways and ski lifts) for free! So even if you’re not into hiking, just take advantage of that and go up a few mountains via lift. It’s a great experience.
Time for cheese
After all that walking, swimming and treading it’s time for dinner. If you want the end the day with a traditional swiss dish, then of course I recommend cheese fondue. In three years of living in Switzerland I never actually tried cheese fondue.! I really regret it because cheese fondues are amazing! You can get them pretty much everywhere in Davos (you can even buy you own cheese fondue kit everywhere). There are simple ways of having cheese fondue with only bread, pickles onions and cucumbers or you can have it with different types of meat. Either way it’s absolutely delicious.
