Where to see tulip fields in Holland?
The Netherlands is a country that is full of beautiful countrysides and lush nature. The Dutch are also really fond of their flowers- especially tulips which are an iconic symbol of Holland.
I recently went to the Netherlands to see the famous tulip fields. Unfortunately I was a bit unlucky (and sad!) as all the tulip fields were already gone when I visited.
It can be hard to predict when’s the best time to see these colorful fields since it varies every year.
In case you’re like me and get really unlucky, there are still other ways to see beautiful flowers in Holland.
Here are my tips on how to avoid disappointment when visiting the tulip fields and three other places that everyone who likes flowers should visit in The Netherlands.
The tulip fields (because of course!)
When do the tulips bloom in Holland? Will the tulips be in bloom when I visit the Netherlands?
As I mentioned before, it can be hard to see the tulip fields bloom at their best. Strictly speaking, the tulip season starts at the end of March and ends in the middle of May. The temperatures, weather and the length of the winter are all important factors though that can determine and change the exact flowering time so it’s impossible to predict an exact date for each year.
In general your best bet is to visit in the second half or April, though.
If you don’t just want to test your luck, you can check websites like tulipsinholland, which “update you weekly on the up to date blooming status of the tulips in Holland.”
Next year I’ll make sure to check the website before I spontaneously decide to book a flight to Amsterdam to look at some non existent tulip fields :,)
Where to see the tulips in Holland?
- Most tulip fields (and the largest) can be found the Noodoostpolder province in Flevoland.
- Visit Hillgom, a beautiful historic old town surrounded by many tulip fields in the Bollenstreek region.
- Haarlem and Noordwijk are also great places to see beautiful, wide flower fields.
- One of the most famous places to see tulip fields in the Netherlands is the famous Keukenhof park in Lisse. It’s also just a 30 minutes car drive away from Schiphol airport making it an easy to reach tourist attraction.

Keukenhof
Even if you get a bit unlucky and the fields are not blooming you’ll find a guaranteed flower paradise at Keukenhof. The world famous park is packed with floral artworks, heaps of colorful flowers (and not just tulips), “inspirational gardens” and flower shows. We even saw a small petting zoo which was adorable! Make sure you have enough time when you visit though. The gardens 32 hectares give you plenty to see and it can take a few hours just to walk through it once. We only had a short weekend so we didn’t have that much and had to rush through but even if you don’t have a whole day to spend there it’s definitely worth visiting if you get a chance to.
Unfortunately the park has closed already for this year but it will be open again from 21 March to 19 May.
Find it @Bezoekadres, Stationsweg 166A, 2161 AM Lisse
Get to Schipol Airport by coach or train from Amsterdam and then take one of their Keukenhof labled buses that will drop you right of in front of the park.

Bloemenmarkt in Amsterdam
Bloemenmarkt is famous for being the only swimming flower market in the world. The market is located on one of the oldest canals in the city alongside the Singel canal between Koningsplein and the Muntplein.
Even if you don’t look to buy flowers or seeds, you can still find interesting things around the market, like old cheese stores and quirky souvenir shops.
Personally I absolutely adored the market and the little shops full of the most beautiful flowers and think it’s definitely worth a visit- even if it’s just for some pretty holidays snaps.
Find it@ Bloemenmarkt, Singel 610-616, Binnenstad

Purple Hills
Seeing the Purple Hills is high up on my Bucket List this year.
Every summer you can see the purple heather blooming for a couple of weeks (in August to be specific) transforming parts of the Dutch countryside into a dreamy and almost mystical place.
The most famous part of the Netherlands to see the heather fields is De Posbank, located in the Veluwezoom National Park. It’s a hilly area that is most popular with tourists and photographers- especially during the early mornings when the fog rises up.
Have you ever been to any of these places or visited any other beautiful floral places I should check out in the Netherlands? Let me know in the comments! 🙂
